Vitamin D is well known for its role in preventing osteoporosis, but this essential nutrient, which is actually a precursor hormone, is responsible for much more than just bone health. Vitamin D may help also protect against health conditions like diabetes, depression, and even cancer. Vitamin D also helps strengthen the immune system, making it an essential component of maintaining your health. Unfortunately, studies suggest that most people aren’t getting enough—and that’s bad news for America’s health. People who don’t get outdoors a lot, who live in northern regions of the country, who are overweight, or who have darker skin are more at risk for being vitamin D deficient. Aging may also be a factor in vitamin D deficiency because as we age, our bodies are less able to produce vitamin D.
