Your gastrointestinal system has superpowers. It performs multiple extremely necessary functions at once, all without breaking a sweat. Not only does it digest food and process and absorb nutrients, it also helps regulate your hormone levels and even stabilize your mood. But because it handles all of these tasks simultaneously, it is quite delicate, and even a small imbalance can have large effects. There are three main areas in which your gastrointestinal system can become imbalanced: hormone receptors, stomach and intestinal lining, and gut bacteria. Each of these areas has its own vulnerabilities. Hormone imbalances or deficiencies can wreak havoc with your hormone receptors, while consuming too many processed foods damages your gastrointestinal lining. Your gut bacteria are affected by both of those factors, making them the most vulnerable area in the gastrointestinal system.
