Hot Flashes—How Many Years Do They Last?

Women who suffer from hot flashes are often desperate for them to stop, especially those who suffer from hot flashes for more than two years. Many women don’t know that symptoms of menopause, such as uncomfortable hot flashes, can last for years, starting before and lingering long after menopause has ended. In fact, some women experience hot flashes for over a decade, well beyond the time they thought that their symptoms would have ceased. Researchers have identified some risk factors that may help predict the severity of hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Women who don’t smoke, who don’t consume excessive amounts of alcohol, have low cholesterol, eat right, and get regular exercise tend to report fewer bothersome hot flashes than women with less healthy lifestyles. And since fluctuating hormones are responsible for the hot flashes associated with menopause, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, coupled with other regimens, can help provide sustained relief.
