When a headache is coming on, sometimes there are subtle warning signs, such as sensitivity to light or noise. Other times, pain or tightness in the head can occur with little notice. Regardless of onset, intensity, or duration, when we are in pain, we often just do our best to start feeling better—and perhaps later try to identify the cause to avoid it from happening again. Common origins of headaches can include factors such as stress and tension, lack of sleep, and dehydration. While it may not always be possible to avoid these triggers, behaviors can be modified to lessen occurrence, such as practicing meditation, going to bed earlier on a regular basis, or ensuring that we drink enough water throughout the day or when sweating heavily.
